How Common Are Medical Malpractice Cases In The Bronx?

We contacted the New York State Office of Court Administration to obtain statistics on the number of medical malpractice cases filed in the City of New York, by county.

The chart below shows the annual number of filings related to medical malpractice in Bronx County.

According to the New York State Office of Court Administration there were a total of 3,554 medical malpractice cases filed in The Bronx between 2011 and 2018. This is an average of 444 cases per year in the borough.

The data also revealed that The Bronx was the New York borough with the third highest number of medical malpractice cases over the same period:

And that a total of 16,769 medical malpractice cases were filed in NYC between 2011 and 2018.

Almost 21% of NYC medical malpractice cases were filed in The Bronx, which is higher than the percentage of New Yorkers who live in the borough (17%).

Figures are not currently available for the number of medical malpractice cases against individual hospitals in the Bronx. Non-cardiac surgery related deaths at North Central Hospital were 11% lower than the national average and over 50% lower than the average for New York State.

Complications were also 35% lower than the national average.

However, Emergency Department timeliness was rated poor with an average wait time of 44 minutes for assessment by a healthcare professional. Over 75% of hospitals in New York State had shorter waiting times than North Central Hospital.

Overall patient satisfaction was 61.33%. Nationally, this puts the hospital in the bottom 2% for patient satisfaction ratings.

This is reflected in the number of complaints against the hospital. There were an average of 0.5 complaints registered for every 10,000 patient days (state average 0.2), with 60% of these complaints resulting in health department citations.

Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center

Non-cardiac surgery related deaths at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center were 36% higher than the national average, and 1.5% higher than the state average.

However, complications were 14% lower than the national average.

The hospital performed poorly in both wait times and patient satisfaction. The average wait time at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center was 81 minutes, ranking it 150th out of 154 facilities rated, while patient satisfaction was just 61.17%.

There were 0.5 complaints against the hospital for every 10,000 patient days (state average 0.2), with 60% of these complaints resulting in health department citations.

Jacobi Medical Center

Non-cardiac surgery related deaths at Jacobi Medical Center were 6% higher than the national average, however they were 21% lower than the average for New York State.

Complications were 82% higher than the national average. The rate of complications in Jacobi Medical Center was approximately double that of Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center, and triple the rate of North Central Hospital.

The hospital was the worst performing facility in New York State for Emergency Department timeliness, with an average patient wait time of almost 2 hours (110 minutes) before assessment by a healthcare professional.

Patient satisfaction was slightly higher than both Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Hospital at 61.83%. Although this ranked the hospital at 4170 out of 4221 for patient satisfaction at a national level.

There were an average of 0.3 complaints against the hospital for every 10,000 patient days, with a third of these complaints resulting in citations.

St. Barnabas Hospital

Non cardiac surgery related deaths at St. Barnabas Hospital were 8% lower than the national average, and 31% lower than the state average. Complications at the hospital were also 7% lower than the national average.

St. Barnabas did not perform well with regard to patient wait times and satisfaction. The average Emergency Department wait time at the hospital was 56 minutes (ranking 139 of 154 facilities), while patient satisfaction was just 59.83%, putting the hospital in the bottom 0.5% nationally.
